For decades, players and coaches alike have spoken about the importance of "muscle memory" in building a great basketball shot. The idea seems intuitive: the more you repeat a motion, the more it becomes automatic, etched into your muscles so it can be recalled under pressure.
There's just one problem: Muscles don't have memory.

"Muscle memory" is a term born from an outdated understanding of motor learning. While it's true that our movements can become more fluid and automatic through repetition, it's not because the muscles themselves have remembered anything.
What's actually happening is this: Your nervous system—specifically the brain and spinal cord—is learning to coordinate movement based on sensory information and past experience. That learning isn't about locking in one exact pattern. It's about tuning your body's responses to the ever-changing demands of the game.
In other words, it's not about memorizing one shot. It's about learning to adapt your shot.

Modern motor learning science—especially under the Ecological Dynamics (ED) approach—tells us that expert performers are not robots repeating one movement. They're highly adaptable movers, responding to small changes in the environment, body, and task.
A great shooter doesn't execute one shot perfectly a thousand times. They execute a thousand slightly different shots, each adapted to:
- a different pass angle
- a slightly different foot position
- the presence of a defender
- their own fatigue or rhythm
This adaptability is the true skill.
Practice Implications: Why "Repetition Without Repetition" Wins
If your goal is to build a shot that works in games, your training needs to reflect the environment in which that shot will be used. That means:
- Adding variability. Don't always shoot from the same spot, with the same rhythm, and the same conditions.
- Using game-like context. Include decisions, timing, pressure, and movement before the shot.
- Encouraging self-organization. Let players find solutions rather than prescribing the exact "ideal" technique.
This doesn't mean we throw away all technique work—it means we stop trying to program a one-size-fits-all solution.

When a coach tells a player to "just get reps" to build muscle memory, they might mean well—but they're setting that player up for a version of success that might not transfer to the game. Instead, let's train our players to become adaptable, attuned, and game-ready.
Because the best shooters don't just remember what the shot felt like.
They solve the shot in real time.
