Why Balance Matters
Balance is a fundamental skill in shooting that is often misunderstood by players and coaches alike. In shooting, balance is about managing and controlling energy. Players are constantly moving dynamically on the floor, creating momentum in every direction. That movement is energy. And when that energy isn't controlled, it becomes Negative Energy — movement that pulls the player or the ball away from the rim.
If a player is moving sideways before their shot and doesn't stop that energy, that sideways energy continues through the shooting motion and often shows up as a miss in that direction or complicated shooting mechanics. Great shooters aren't motionless—they excel at getting control. It's not always PERFECT balance, but they learn to fight to keep their shot simple and controlled.
Balance, then, is the ability to manage how energy flows through the shot, not the absence of motion.

When a player struggles with balance, I first try to determine what kind of balance problem they have. Each type points to a different constraint or limitation that we can target.
- Static Balance. The ability to hold a position without losing control of the center of mass. This is foundational for beginners or players with limited strength or stability, but rarely used in a basketball game.
- Dynamic Balance. Maintaining control through continuous motion, like when coming off a pin-down or shooting off one foot. Often used in basketball, but not overly challenging for most athletes.
- Transitional Balance. Maintaining control while shifting from one phase to another—for example, from a run into a stop, or change of direction.
- Reactive Balance. Recovering and stabilizing after an unplanned disruption—absorbing contact, landing awkwardly, or adjusting mid-air.
A less athletic player might need to develop Static Balance just to find control. A professional athlete might lose Dynamic Balance when their movement gets too aggressive. Almost everyone struggles with Transitional and Reactive Balance, because those are the moments that can't be pre-planned. Understanding which type is breaking down helps me create a more precise solution.
The Habits That Support All Types of Balance
There are a few principles that help in every situation:
- Keep feet outside the hips for a stable base.
- Maintain an athletic posture that allows quick adjustment.
- Keep the core engaged to help direct energy efficiently through the body.
These are not static positions—they are tools. And they are certainly not a comprehensive list, but rather the important foundational ideas. Simply drilling these postures won't make a player balanced. I often see coaches use static balance drills—like single-leg deadlifts with a basketball—but those rarely hit the game-representative demands of shooting. Basketball rarely gives you the luxury of being still.
Instead, we need movement-rich environments that challenge those same principles in motion.
This is also where the Information Processing model begins to fall apart. If we believe that players simply need to be told the right three things—"feet wide, athletic posture, engage your core"—and repeat drills where they are perfectly balanced hoping those cues will automatically transfer into game balance, we're ignoring two realities.
First, each of those solutions is context-dependent. How wide a player's feet needs to be when they're standing still is different than when they're sliding sideways at speed. The posture that stabilizes forward movement will be different from the one needed when moving backward or absorbing contact. Those habits are the trunk of the tree, off of which all the branches spread. Simply practicing the trunk movement won't help with the branches.
Second, we can't possibly script every variation. No list of cues can cover the range of balance problems players face in games. Instead, we need to create environments that invite players to discover these adjustments for themselves — modifying constraints so that they must self-organize around each new exception to the "rules." That's where true adaptability is built.
Designing Drills and Constraints
Once I know which type of balance is the issue and which habits or motor patterns might be holding the player back, I design practice activities that challenge that specific form of stability. The drills evolve with the player's coordination level, following the Periodization of Shooting Training (PoST) model—moving between Movement Coordination Training (MCT) to Skill Adaptability Training (SAT) and back in a non-linear fashion.
MCT: Movement Coordination Training
The goal is to help the player feel and control large amounts of movement energy.
- Sprint and stop sequences
- Jumping and landing with quick balance recovery
- Explosive movements that force the player to absorb momentum and redirect it toward the rim
I'll vary distances, directions, and ways to stop to push adaptability. The key question: How can I create an activity that almost forces the player to figure out balance on their own?
SAT-MV: Skill Adaptability Training – Movement Variability
This is where the player begins applying balance in more representative contexts, often in a 1v1 situation with a teammate or a coach.
- Drills like the push drill or lean drill, where the player learns to control their balance in challenging situations
- Added variability in passes, dribble pickups, or starting movements
- Linking the balance challenge to a specific spot, movement, or read on the floor
SAT-CT and SAT-TBT: Context and Time-Based Transfer
Now, balance is tested in competitive and time-pressured situations involving more defenders and teammates.
- Small-sided games with balance constraints: shooter must change direction before shooting; defender must bump the shooter before the shot; coach calls a shot with limited time
Throughout these drills, the goal isn't perfection—it's awareness. Players learn to feel when their balance supports or fights their energy direction and adapt accordingly.
Periodizing Balance Work
Just like any skill, balance work should be planned relative to the competitive schedule.
- MCT drills. Early in the week or when there are several days before the next game. These are higher-load, higher-chaos activities.
- SAT drills. As game day approaches, focusing on transferring that control into realistic, contextual shooting situations.
I'll prioritize the phases that challenge a player's weakest type of balance the most. A player struggling with coordinating a new movement pattern might spend more time in a MCT phase and smaller amounts of time in SAT until that habit is stabilized, whereas a player controlling their reactive balance in game situations might spend more time in a SAT-TBT phase.

When coaches understand the different kinds of balance and design practice environments that challenge them, players develop shots that hold up under pressure—not because they were told what balance looks like, but because they learned how to find it.
